🎲 THURSDAY 12/10: Ludic Liberation Lab ~ CONVERSATION GAMES w/Aaron Finbloom 🎲
can we liberate our discourse?
Dear Ludic Liberators,
The last Ludic Liberation Lab of 2020, our founding year, is this Thursday! 👻
The group started with a seed of a dream and just 7 people gathering on a cold, dark February night at the post-capitalist playground of the Philadelphia Bourse Building (the country’s first stock & commodities exchange, now a shiny and underused co-working mall). Only a month later we were forced to relocate to the global pandemic playground of Zoom. Since then, curious and brave souls from all over the world have played with liberating (ourselves from? within the constraints of?) Choice, Time, Knowing, Dominating Cultural Canons, Philosophy, Desire, our Human Bodies, our Minds’ Tricks, and the Reign of Rules. So it is only appropriate that the last meeting of the year should tie it all together with a game called META.
I’m so excited to host Aaron Finbloom as this month’s Principal Investigator (PI) to lead us in exploring how we might play with CONVERSATION. Aaron is a philosopher, performance artist, pedagogue and co-founder of The School of Making Thinking (SMT). His work involves designing performative “conversation pieces” for transformative inquiry that seek to aesthetically expand the scope of philosophical, academic and psychotherapeutic pedagogies. Finbloom's projects have been presented internationally at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Gallery 151 (New York), Maschinenhaus Kulturbrauerei (Berlin), UNAM (Mexico City), and MainLine Theatre (Montreal). He holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities from Concordia University (Montreal), and teaches philosophy at City College in New York City.
Aaron will lead us in several games for liberating our conversations, including his original game, META. META is a game that hopes to shake up our habitual language. By making our hidden conversational rules explicit, it invites us to play with them and try on new rules! META asks: what is possible with conversation when we actively design how we speak while we speak? What happens when I can only say this, while you can only say that? Ludic Liberation Lab participants will get to play a new virtual version of META whose production was motivated by the unique conversational conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Join us to play META - a game of liberating conversations
