One day a man approached the Zen Buddhist monk and poet Ikkyu and asked:
âMaster, will please write for me some maxims of the highest wisdom?â
Ikkyu took his brush and wrote: âAttention.â
âIs that all?â asked the man.
Ikkyu then wrote: âAttention, Attention.â
âWell,â said the man, âI really donât see much depth in what you have written.â
The Ikkyu wrote the same word three times: âAttention, Attention, Attention.â
Half-angered, the man demanded: âWhat does that word âAttentionâ mean, anyway?â
Ikkyu gently responded, Attention means attention.â
This month at Ludic Liberation Lab, we will be playing with our attention! đđđ
What is it drawn to? Where does it go when it wanders? How can we harness it? Does it really make things grow? To explore these questions, we will tinker with directing attention outward to our environment, inward toward our emotions and thoughts, and to the here and now of our bodily senses. We will experiment with relaxing and concentrating our attention to explore its range of intensities â from noticing to witnessing to observing to obsessing. Finally, we will try out new liberating games we can play in a world of attention deficit, fracturing, and capture.
This lab will be led by Natalia Stroika (Existential Gamemaker/Destroyer and Founder of Ludic Liberation), drawing from a repertoire of established visual games, theater games, awareness games, the Focusing technique, as well as a few original inventions đŠâđŹ đ˛ 𤥠!
