THURSDAY 6/22 ~ Ludic Liberation Lab: REJECTION
Does "no" make room for a more authentic yes?
Dear Ludic Liberators,
A core inspiration for many Ludic Liberation game mechanics is Rejection Therapy — a game of trying to get rejected in small ways for 100 days in a row. It uses a classic liberatory “reversal” tactic — change the win condition by making an undesirable outcome (a way to lose) into a desirable one (a way to win), and see what you learn about yourself (spoiler: you learn that experiencing rejection isn’t that bad and might accidentally get something you want in the process).
But. Even though I love stories of writers and artists that wallpaper their bathroom with rejection letters, and even though I’ve played Rejection Therapy for many week-long stretches (every time I start getting sensitive to it, I think it’s time to build the rejection muscle), and even though I have challenged myself to explore the shadowy pleasures of not being chosen or allowed or given what I want, I still really really really hate rejection.
So I’m dedicating June’s Lab to playing with rejection!
Can we make rejection fun?
Can we relate to rejection as cosmic protection?
Can we learn to reject what we don’t want with kindness and softness and ease?
Can we learn to receive rejection with grace and lightness and wisdom?
Can we access the complexity of things that come up when we reject or get rejected (e.g., anger, relief, guilt, shame) and allow them to express in playful and healing ways?
We will be giving and receiving rejection for things both silly and serious, so come prepared to thicken your skin! 💪
